July 11, 2023 Sustainable Landmark for Amsterdam completed with WasteBasedBricks® AMSTERDAM, JULY 2023 – A new sustainable landmark for Amsterdam has been completed along the water of the IJ River. Welcome 360 Degrees, the closing piece of the Grasweg road. The design of this building has been developed integrally with the adjacent urban development plan Cityplot Buiksloterham and shares the same ambitions regarding flexibility, circularity and social sustainability. As the tallest and most prominent structure in the area, 360 Degrees is a sculptural symbol of reuse — not only from its surroundings but also from the water and the city centre across. Credit: Sebastian van Damme A sculptural symbol of re-use. Teaming up with Amsterdam-based architecture studio (and our office partner) Studioninedots, we developed a new series of WasteBasedBricks® in which selected demolition waste is upcycled into high-quality building materials. With these bricks, we were able to repurpose a total of over 152 tonnes of building waste in the design for 360 Degrees. The challenge of the facade effect, which gradually transitions from dark to light, was mainly in the search for pure white, pure black and different shades of grey construction waste to achieve the right mix of colours. Inside the building, some of the stones have been used in a sawn version, literally making the demolition waste visible.
