October 12, 2015 What if Glass Waste Becomes a Valuable Asset? Together with six other Dutch designers, StoneCycling travelled to Zanzibar as part of the “Bottle Up“ project. Here, we studied glass waste streams on the Island and came up with sustainable solutions. In Zanzibar, tourists have become an important source of income, as well as (glass) waste. However, the island is not yet equipped to process all this glass waste. This means the glass makes its way into the natural surroundings. What if the tourism that caused the waste, could also contribute to processing it? Dutch Design Week 2015 At the upcoming Dutch Design Week in The Netherlands, Bottle-up will launch its first results: seven products made out of the glass waste. In Zanzibar we worked with local craftsmen to turn glass waste into a first series of products. Offering these products to tourists on the island completes the circle: the waste caused by tourism is transformed into valuable up-cycle products. The tourists effectively finance the next step: the development of construction materials made from glass waste. Now you now have at least two reasons to come to the Dutch Design Week, hosted from 17 to 24 October 2015: the Bottle-up project and StoneCycling as part of the Circular Factory!
