Recycled Pretty Plastic Facade at Howest Education Campus in Bruges, Belgium

Sustainability at Howest Campus

Pretty Plastic, a FRONT® partner, has supplied the new building of the Howest campus in Bruges with 100% recycled PVC panels.

The facade, developed specifically for Howest, highlights the building’s innovative and eco-conscious design. For the colour palette, panels in ochre, terracotta, and grey were combined with a custom designed green color that harmonizes perfectly with the campus’s existing architectural elements.

In this project, 28,556 kg of plastic waste was upcycled into new cladding material.

Solutions for the Future

The Howest Campus Brugge Station project, led by a collaborative team of architects, designers, and contractors, is a shining example of modern sustainable building practices.

As part of their mission to create a “Living Campus” that fosters learning, inspiration, and innovation, the team has carefully integrated both the old and the new. At the heart of this project lies a commitment to sustainability and innovative material use, and Pretty Plastic is proud to play a key role in this transformation.

The recycled PVC ‘First One‘ panels used in this project alone have diverted 28,556 kg of waste from landfills, a significant step towards Pretty Plastic and FRONT’s shared mission for a cleaner planet.

According to INBO Architects, who were instrumental in the campus’s design, the decision to work with Pretty Plastic aligns with their focus on sustainability, stating, “We opted for a facade made of recycled ‘Pretty Plastic’. This product contributes to a circular economy in which waste does not exist, and raw materials are always reused. And it looks nice, too!”

The Howest campus is not only designed to be a functional and inspiring learning environment but also a beacon of sustainable development. Pretty Plastic’s contribution ensures that the new building is not just visually appealing but also a testament to what’s possible when we prioritize eco-friendly solutions in construction.

This project is a great step forward for a cleaner, greener planet, and we are excited to see the impact it will have on future generations.

"We looked for as many sustainable solutions as possible. We kept the recognizable buildings intact and utilized their existing qualities. We minimized the amount of new materials. And when we do add materials, they are multifunctional."
