February 23, 2026 Mimmik® Tile: a new name for a growing technology The material previously known as BioBasedTile continues under a new name: Mimmik Tile. The change reflects both the maturity of the technology and a clearer articulation of what the material truly represents. Developed and produced by Biomason®, Mimmik Tile is the first-ever tile that grows with the help of bacteria, now produced on an industrial scale. The new name marks an important step in the evolution of this technology. The term ‘biobased’ suggests a product made from organic or plant-based resources. While bacteria play a crucial role in the production process, the tile itself is not composed of organic matter. The former name therefore did not fully capture the essence of the material. Mimmik Tile is not about replacing cement with biomass but about rethinking the way mineral materials can be formed. The name Mimmik refers to the process behind the tile. Inspired by coral, one of nature’s most resilient structures, the technology mimics natural mineral formation. Using Zymecrete™ technology, bacteria bind carbon and calcium into a marble-like material. Within two days, the tiles grow into strong, durable floor tiles, without the need for traditional cement. Now in its third generation, the production process has matured into a stable and scalable system. Compared to conventional cement-based products, Mimmik Tile reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 60 percent. At a time when cement production accounts for 8 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, this marks a significant step towards lowering the environmental impact of building materials. Mimmik Tile is available in two colours, Ginger and Pepper, and in honed or polished finishes. The tiles measure 400 x 200 mm with a thickness of 19 mm. With its new name, Mimmik Tile underlines what it has always been: a material that grows, inspired by nature and engineered for the future of construction.
