Basic Third is a demountable facade tile made from 100% recycled rigid PVC from construction waste. The system is designed for disassembly and mechanical recycling, so the plastic stays in circulation instead of ending up in landfill or incineration. The tiles are 30 cm wide, in line with standard building dimensions, which keeps cutting waste to a minimum. By aligning or offsetting the rows, architects can create a wide range of facade patterns, in 12 colours. Where has Basic Third been used? One of the projects highlighted in the shortlist is Plus Ultra III at Wageningen University, described by Dezeen as the Netherlands’ first timber laboratory building.
