Mimmik Tile is shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2026 in Material innovation.

A tile grown with the help of bacteria

Mimmik Tile is a floor tile grown with the help of bacteria and now produced on an industrial scale by Biomason in Ikast, Denmark. Its Zymecrete™ binder forms through a controlled biological process, inspired by the way coral grows, instead of high-temperature kiln firing.

Preliminary modelling shows approximately 60% lower CO₂ (GWP, A1–A3) than comparable Portland cement-based tiles. An independent LCA is being finalised and a third-party verified EPD is forthcoming.
