WasteBasedBricks and WasteBasedSlips: everything you need to know

WasteBasedBricks are facade bricks made from 60% waste streams, with the look and technical quality of traditional brick and a lower carbon footprint. WasteBasedSlips are brick slips cut from the same bricks. This article brings together the key facts: sizes, colours, technical specifications, environmental data and projects.

What are WasteBasedBricks?

WasteBasedBricks are facade bricks made from 60% waste streams, with a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional brick. They give a building the familiar look and technical quality of traditional brick, in a more sustainable way. For architects, developers and public clients, they are a concrete tool to meet CO₂ and circularity targets without compromising on the quality required for facade construction.

WasteBasedBricks are produced by DC Bricks in the Netherlands using the soft-mud waterstruck method, with a punched texture.

What are WasteBasedSlips?

WasteBasedSlips are brick slips cut from WasteBasedBricks. Traditional brick slips often use only the two outer faces of a brick (2-from-1), and the core is lost. WasteBasedSlips use the whole brick: four slips from one brick (4-from-1). That means less waste per m², maximum use of a material that already consists of at least 60% waste, and more efficient use of energy and raw materials.

Sawing also creates a sliced surface that reveals the inside of the brick, next to the familiar punched face. Combining punched and sliced slips adds colour variation, visible layers and a livelier facade. Read more about the 4-from-1 principle.

Which sizes and colours are available?

  • Waal format: 210 × 100 × 50 mm (standard size; see the datasheet for the exact dimensions per colour)
  • Hilversums format: 240 × 90 × 40 mm (T2 – R1)
  • BS format: 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm (T2 – R1)

Dimensions vary slightly per colour. The exact size of each colour is listed in its datasheet, which you can download directly from our Downloads Centre.

WasteBasedBricks come in eight nuanced colours: Almond, Black Pepper, Lemon, Mopé, Mushroom, Nougat, Pistachio and Radish. They are applied in exterior facades, laid in full bricks.

What are the technical specifications?

  • Production method: soft-mud, waterstruck
  • Texture: punched
  • Initial water absorption: IW3, normally absorbent
  • Water absorption: ≤ 10% by mass
  • Frost resistance: F2D
  • Fire classification: A1
  • Gross bulk density: D1

WasteBasedBricks comply with NEN-EN 771 and NL-BSB and are supplied with standard warranties. Thanks to their conventional dimensions and installation method, they can be applied without design modifications.

Sustainability only gains real meaning when it becomes tangible in projects.

How sustainable are WasteBasedBricks?

WasteBasedBricks contain 60% post-consumer content and fall within Class 3 of BRL 7010, the Dutch assessment guideline for recycled content. They perform well on Paris Proof indicators and are listed in the Dutch National Environmental Database (NMD). The technical service life of facing brick is set at 100+ years.

Environmental impact per m² of facing brick, in kg CO₂-eq, based on LCA data verified by an independent review body:

Colour GWP A1–A3 GWP A1–A5 GWP A–D
Radish 13.3 15.8 17.4
Nougat 12.9 15.4 17.0
Mopé 13.0 15.5 17.1
Lemon 19.8 22.3 24.0

A1–A3 covers the product stage, A1–A5 includes the construction stage and A–D the full life cycle. Figures are for 1 m² of facing brick at the standard thickness of 100 mm, excluding masonry and joint mortar, and scale proportionally for other thicknesses.

Where have WasteBasedBricks and WasteBasedSlips been used?

  • 5TRACKS, Breda: a mixed-use area next to Breda station combining living, working, a hotel, a park, catering and shops, designed by Powerhouse Company and Shift Architecture Urbanism. The first large-scale application in the Netherlands of brick slips made from recycled construction waste, using WasteBasedBricks and WasteBasedSlips in Nougat, Radish and Pistachio, punched and sliced. 385,519 kg of waste upcycled.
  • Solna Link, Sweden: an office building in Arenastaden for Skanska, designed by Wingårdhs, with a sculptural brick facade that gradually shifts in colour. The client asked for the most sustainable bricks available, using WasteBasedBricks in Mopé, Radish, Black Pepper, Almond and Nougat. 727,814 kg of waste upcycled.
  • Technique, London: a new office building in Clerkenwell, created by transforming two historic properties, designed by Buckley Gray Yeoman. 22,080 kg of waste upcycled.

Frequently asked questions

Are WasteBasedBricks technically comparable to traditional bricks?

Yes. WasteBasedBricks comply with NEN-EN 771 and NL-BSB, have fire classification A1 and frost resistance F2D, and come with standard warranties. They are laid like traditional bricks.

What is the difference between WasteBasedBricks and WasteBasedSlips?

WasteBasedBricks are full facade bricks. WasteBasedSlips are brick slips cut from those bricks, four from each brick, available with a punched or sliced face.

Who produces WasteBasedBricks?

WasteBasedBricks are produced by DC Bricks in the Netherlands and supplied through FRONT.
