WasteBasedBricks Included in Dutch NMD (National Environmental Database)

WasteBasedBricks are now officially recognised within the Dutch construction sector through inclusion in the Nationale Milieu Database (National Environmental Database)—making the value of residual streams more visible.

“For us, circular raw materials are the foundation. Achieving a low MKI-score (Environmental Cost Indicator) is not a goal in itself, but it is proof that things can be done differently.” - Roel Wetzel, DC Bricks

What’s Changed?

The inclusion of WasteBasedBricks in the NMD follows a change in which bricks and mortar are assessed as separate categories. This change makes it possible to compare material choices more fairly and transparently.

The circular value of the WasteBasedBricks is now finally represented properly. Not hidden within a general calculation, but assessed based on what the brick itself contributes.

Starting with Residual Streams

WasteBasedBricks are produced with at least 60% residual streams that would otherwise lose their value. These streams are carefully selected, processed and transformed into new ceramic bricks by our producer DC Bricks. The production also consumes far less energy than the traditional industry.

The Radish WasteBasedBrick has an MKI score of €1.80, based on set 1. This is significantly lower than the industry average (€3.42 for a comparable facade brick). But a low MKI isn’t a goal in itself. It is the outcome of different choices, for example, working with mainly residual streams. If you consistently make those choices, environmental performance naturally becomes visible.

The inclusion in the NMD makes it easier for architects, developers and contractors to apply circular bricks in projects. Not only based on conviction, but also supported by data. That matters, because circular construction only truly becomes scalable when it becomes practical.
