At Helix Lab Research and Education Center in Kalundborg, MSc students from universities in Denmark and abroad carry out their thesis work in collaboration with the Kalundborg industry as Helix Lab Fellows.
This is the first time that Biomason® BioBasedTiles, the first ever bio-based tile that grows with the help of bacteria, are being laid in Europe. A key moment that marks the new path we all have to take to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry.

An important choice made to reduce the building’s CO₂ emissions has been in the tiles used for the building’s flooring. Produced by Biomason®, the tiles for Helix Lab are created without traditional concrete. Instead, Biomason uses biocement, with a groundbreaking CO₂-neutral production process.
BioBasedTiles are are produced in a lab in a process similar to how coral reefs grow, each paver formed in a mould where sand is mixed with nutrient-rich liquids.
This is your solution to lower your carbon footprint: the biologically-produced binder in the product has 95% less CO₂ emission than traditional cement, yet it’s 3x stronger and 20x lighter than concrete block.
Less than a year after AP Pension’s subsidiary, AP Ejendomme, together with the turnkey contractor Hoffmann and Kalundborg’s mayor Martin Damm turned the first sod for the education and research center Helix Lab, the building is now finished and ready for transfer.
Apart from using BioBasedTiles, Helix Lab is the first building build by AP Pension where the load-bearing structures and facades are in solid wood. This results in a lower CO₂ emission for the building than if concrete had been used.
With its 1550 square meters, the Helix Lab building is one of the smaller projects in AP Pensions’s portfolio, but it contains several sustainable elements that make it a very exciting and special project.
