Sustainable Redevelopment

FRONT® (formerly StoneCycling) is proud to be part of yet another innovative design project in the Netherlands where technology, sustainability, and a healthy working environment are core elements.

EDGE Amsterdam West is an existing office building from the 1970s by EDGE (formerly OVG), redeveloped to a design by de Architekten Cie.

The project has APG, Alliander, and Intertrust as key tenants.

History & Future

Originally, the building was designed by A.N. Oyevaar from the agency Oyevaar Stolle Van Gool, the predecessor of de Architekten Cie. In the redevelopment, the architectural firm retained the character of the building while upgrading its features to modern-day standards. They added a futuristic element in the form of a glass dome covering the unused outdoor space and turned it into the new heart of the building.

All facades are completely renovated, and the building is equipped with solar panels on the roof and cold heat storage underground.

Light courts are added for additional daylight (and thus a better work environment), and four prominent stairs replace the elevator shafts to encourage tenants to make healthy choices.

Pilot Project

Unique in this partnership is that demolition waste from the site has been upcycled into brand-new WasteBasedSlips for the interior of the building. The materials used largely determined the appearance of the final project.

We get a lot of requests to use a building’s ‘own’ waste for projects, so this is an important first step into possibly releasing this internationally in the near future.

Innovation

The so-called “IP Backbone” of EDGE serves as the main connector and incorporates the latest advances in IoT and AI. This will, for example, allow tenants to use a smart app for workplace customisation as well as offer in-depth insights about their surroundings and track the building’s energy efficiency through dashboards enabled by big data analytics. EDGE further reports that the project is fully energy-positive.

An absolute eye-catcher in the architectural landscape of Amsterdam, this redevelopment is an office where people can collaborate, develop, and be inspired daily – and admire our WasteBasedSlips, of course!

Media Mentions

Circular principles have been applied at every stage of the redevelopment, and the building’s enclosure has been specially designed to minimise energy consumption.

EDGE

In Smart Building EDGE Amsterdam West, the highest levels of sustainability and health are achieved: BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum. It is even already ‘Paris Proof 2050’. The building is gas-free and energy-positive.
