After working with the architects of Concrete on the exterior of the large-scale project “The West“ in New York, we were challenged to extend the bricks from the outer facade into the lobby of the building, using brick slips.
Located on 11th Avenue, between 47th and 48th streets in Manhattan, The West is a human-scaled, environmentally conscious hub of vibrant neighbourhood life. The condos, mixed with studios and 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments, are designed from the inside out.

For the wall behind the reception desk in the lobby, we have made a relief with custom-made Truffle Shine WasteBasedSlips by letting some of the brick slips protrude a little further than others.
By also using a staggered thickness, a poem by a local poet can be read in code.

The relief in the lobby is indeed a translated text… depicted in Morse code! With bricks, we’ve created a graphic work of art that subtly adds an extra layer to this space.
The text translated into Morse code refers to the neighbourhood Hell’s Kitchen, where our project is located, and reads:
’This neighbourhood is hot as hell.’
‘Hell is cool.’
’This here’s hell’s kitchen.’
